Gino Fabbri is ‘Completely Nuts!’

‘Sanity’ is a word not often associated with comedian Gino Fabbri – or more specifically, with the hair-brained assortment of characters with the strangest outlooks on life which he portrays!

Gino’s brand new show, Completely Nuts, has less to do with squirrels and everything to do with the crazy, balmy, loopy, half-witted perspectives and shenanigans which these characters get up to.

Take his traffic officer Helmut Ramspoed, a self-proclaimed superhero of traffic ordinance compliance, who takes his job just a little too seriously to be called mentally stable! Or there’s the ultra-loyal English soccer fan Wayne Noibert Rooney, who’s dumber than a box of hair and completely the misses the message about everything South African whilst on his wife-avoiding world cup soccer sojourn.

See the world through the wine-stained eyes of the colourful Virgil September from Mitchells Plain or meet the terrifically wealthy Sheik Rattle n Roll, who puts a price tag on everything and shows how different priorities can be when money flows like oil.

Follow the ongoing saga of self delusion as Latin lover Minuto Peniso shares more unfortunate stories of conquest and virility, whilst Ruan Hollywood shows his latest musical penchants and takes the next step to making it small!

These are just a few of the defective personalities you’ll meet in this loony bin of a comedy show!

Donna Africa lends a semblance of class to proceedings as Gino’s partner in crime.

Plenty of laughs abound in the riotous Fabbri tradition – but whatever you do, don’t expect to come home any the wiser after seeing this show!

After an absence of several years the Cape Town City Ballet, South Africa’s premiere ballet company, makes a welcome return to East London early next month to perform ‘In the Spotlight’, especially created for local audiences. The short season of only three performances takes place at the Guild Theatre on 2nd July at 7.30pm and on the 3rd July at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

Robin van Wyk, the Artistic Director of the Cape Town City Ballet, well known in the Eastern Cape through his work with Youth Ballet projects in Port Elizabeth and East London, will be directing ‘In the Spotlight’, a varied programme of short ballets and pas de deux from the classical and neo-classical repertoire.

‘In The Spotlight’ includes something for all lovers of classical ballet. The first half of the programme features highlights from a new work ‘Poetry In Motion‘, which received critical and audience acclaim in the recent Cape Town season. It is based on a range of poetry reflecting themes of the Journey of Life, Love, Loss and Celebration. Items from ‘Poetry In Motion’ include ‘How Shall I Love Thee’ choreographed by Veronica Paeper, ‘Daffodil’ choreographed by Robin van Wyk and ‘Far from Here’ choreographed by Erica Brumage.

Also in the first half of the programme will be the famous grand classical pas de deux from ‘The Nutcracker’, the ‘Flower Festival’ pas de deux and the fiery Gypsy pas de deux from ‘Don Quixote’, together with other pieces which highlight the versatility of the dancers.

The second half of ‘In The Spotlight’ includes ballets and pas de deux such as “Emperor Waltz’, ‘Concert’, ‘Giselle’ and ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, performed by some of the soloists and stars of the Cape Town City Ballet. These include Laura Bosenberg, Kim Vieira, Celeste George, Lauren Rogers, Angela Hansford, Janine Laidlow, Melanie Seeger, Thomas Thorne, Xola Putye, Warren May and Ivan Boonzaaier.

Lauren Rogers, from East London, features in a number of items including the solo, Meditation, with which she has become associated since performing it at the CTCB’s 75th anniversary gala in 2009. Meditation, choreographed by the late David Poole, is danced to the hauntingly beautiful music from Massenet’s ‘Thais’. Rogers, who matriculated at Stirling High School, received her initial ballet training from Sally Sieg and since joining CTCB in 2005, has swiftly risen through the ranks to become a soloist in 2007.
