There’s nothing that binds a culture more than a good rugby match except its music! In Jou Ma Se … Platespeler we look at Afrikaans music against the backdrop of changing technology – from seven singles to streaming and everything in between – as well as changes in our country, which gave a new voice to Afrikaans artists.
I went “down memory lane”…. from songs grandpa played for us on the record player on a Sunday, to my brother and I fighting over whose cassette was going to be played in the car on the way to school (thankfully we got “walkmans” to solve that problem !), to where dad played his Smokey and Billy Joel in High School dorm (then on CDs) for 2 hours every Friday and Sunday, for 5 years. The good old times with family and friends. Our younger generation does not always take into account how special and unique our Afrikaans mother tongue is. Tonight our Afrikaans music culture, from start to finish, was on fire, excellent. Thank you very much again. Grateful and so privileged.

It was indeed a striking evening! The music choices were top notch, the artists extremely competent, and my Afrikaner blood is sizzling in my veins!

A two-hour emotional rollercoaster of almost 100 years of Afrikaans music; a show that young and old can enjoy. The storyline makes the show more than just a replica of Afrikaans hits. Their vocal talent combined with Kerry’s bass guitar, Rob’s acoustic and electric guitars and Kristo’s drums give new life to old familiars. A show you shouldn’t miss.

What an energetic and talented group of young musicians to be able to enjoy and appreciate last night! Everyone masters their instruments! They took the audience on a chronological tour through Afrikaans music over the years. From 1930 to 2024. From Chris Blignaut to Karen Zoid. Through all the phases, movements and genres in the musical world of the language. The interpretation of each artist’s work brilliantly presented. This was an unforgettable experience, an exciting experience!

Rob strums the guitars with passion and perfection. Kerry has an incredible crystal clear warm and rich voice. Kristo plays the drums with such intensity and yet sensitivity that you can’t help but wiggle your feet. A trio that can still reach great musical heights. I hope they get the recognition they deserve. A program that was absolutely value for money. The story line was catchy with a comical twist at the right times. Highly recommended.
